The Cooler Escape score is a transparent editorial comparison of the specific routes assessed on each destination page. It is not a forecast or official climate classification.

1. Unit of Comparison
The score belongs to the route set described on a page, not to every part of a country. A route may be a mountain town, high valley, lake district, forest region, northern coast, island or other planning base selected because it may offer meaningful summer relief.
Route count creates no bonus. A page with eight routes is not automatically scored above a page with six.
2. Fixed Factors and Weights

3. Route Aggregation
Each route receives an evidence-based value or categorical score for a factor. Routes are normally combined using the median. The median reduces the influence of one unusually cold, hot, easy or difficult route and keeps the result centered on the route set a reader is most likely to encounter.
4. Climate Normalization
Temperature and heat-exposure values are converted to a 0–100 scale using fixed scoring anchors and linear interpolation. Cooler daytime conditions and useful night-time relief generally score higher, but the evidence block on each page should disclose the raw median, scoring anchors and calculation used.
Values are capped at the top and bottom of the scale. The same factor weights are used across pages, while the relevant travel window may differ between the Northern and Southern Hemispheres or between tropical highlands and temperate regions.
5. Categorical Rubrics
High-ground access, water or forest access, transport and crowd pressure often cannot be represented by one globally comparable numeric dataset. These factors use fixed categorical rubrics. Each route should receive a disclosed score with a short rationale, and the route median becomes the factor score.
6. Data Hierarchy
- Direct official station or operational data.
- Nearby representative official data with disclosed distance, elevation or exposure differences.
- Recognized gridded or reanalysis datasets sampled at route centers.
- Published official frequency or categorical evidence.
- Transparent proxy methods when stronger route-level data are unavailable.
Proxy use must be disclosed and should influence the comparability grade.
7. Coverage Rules
An incomplete daily series is not treated as proof that no heat threshold was reached. Where a daily threshold calculation is used, the page should disclose the expected days, valid days and any minimum coverage rule. A complete representative threshold series may be used when the direct route series is too incomplete, but the limitation must be stated.
8. Weighted Total
The final score is calculated as the sum of each factor score multiplied by its fixed weight. The unrounded weighted total should be shown before rounding to the displayed whole-number score.
Calculation example: a factor score of 80 with a 25% weight contributes 20 points to the final result.
9. Comparability Quality
Quality A indicates strong direct and closely matched evidence; Quality B indicates generally strong evidence with some proxies or mixed periods; Quality C indicates more substantial representative data, categorical fallbacks or comparability limitations. The quality grade describes evidence, not destination quality.
10. Review Date and Versioning
Each scored page should display a methodology version and review date. A material change to weights, scales, route aggregation or quality rules requires a new methodology version. Routine source refreshes can retain the version while updating the review date.
11. What the Score Does Not Measure
- Real-time weather or emergency conditions.
- Trip price, visa eligibility or accommodation quality.
- Personal health, mobility or risk tolerance.
- Every settlement or climate zone within a country.
- Guaranteed comfort, safety, quietness or availability.
12. Reader Review
Every factor should include its method, raw value, route values, source mapping, period and sources. Readers may report a calculation or evidence issue through the Contact page.
