The Americas require two different summer calendars. Northern routes are tested against June–August heat, while Patagonia and other Southern Hemisphere destinations face their warmest travel conditions in December–February. Mountain elevation, Pacific and Atlantic exposure, Arctic latitude and large north–south distances create very different forms of heat relief.
Choose the hemisphere before comparing the destination
Canada, Alaska and northern U.S. routes belong to a June–August planning frame. Argentina and Chile need a December–February summer frame. Equatorial Andean routes are better understood through elevation and wet–dry season patterns. Keeping those periods separate prevents misleading continent-wide temperature comparisons.
Northern summer and Southern summer are separate decisions
Use June–August for most northern destinations and December–February for southern summer routes. In the Andes, elevation can matter more than calendar season, but rainfall and road conditions still change through the year. Cooler Escape country pages show the scoring window used for each route portfolio.
Four geographic systems shape cooler travel in the Americas

One scoring framework, different route portfolios
The Cooler Escape Score combines peak-summer daytime temperature, night-time cooling, mountain access, forest/lake/coast access, heatwave exposure, transport accessibility and peak-season crowd pressure. A continent pillar summarizes the published country and region route sets; it does not replace the evidence on each destination page.
